Neurodiversity

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the recognition that there are many different ways that people experience and interact with others and the world around them. While it is frequently seen as a reference to autism, ADHD, and learning disorders, neurodiversity can also simply refer to the fact that there are many different ways of thinking and processing information.

What is the neurodiversity movement?

The neurodiversity movement is an effort to recognize neurological differences amongst all people and to promote the inclusion and acceptance of these differences. This movement puts an emphasis on these differences being simply differences and not deficits. There is no right way of thinking, learning, communicating, and processing information.

I don’t think we had that when I was a kid…

There is a trend right now in adults recognizing that they are probably neurodivergent, and they have spent decades trying to overcome struggles that they viewed as faults or failures within. These same adults are learning ways to embrace their differences, view and use these differences as strengths, and find more manageable ways to navigate life’s challenges.

What if my child is neurodivergent?

If your child is neurodivergent, they are still your child that you can love and embrace. Many people find that some simple guidance can go a long way in helping the child and family improve their overall functioning. Like so many other things in life, neurodivergence can be a blessing and a curse, and we can work together to reduce challenges and increase moments of happiness.
